And that doesn’t mean the group performs endless renditions of “Danny Boy.” Band member Andy Redmond says the group delves beyond what he calls the “green beer tunes” that become popular every March 17.
”We generally like to do a lot more of the obscure stuff,” Mr. Redmond says. “Because there are so many bands that do the more common tunes — which are wonderful, there’s a reason why they’re the common tunes, because they’re the favorites.”
A favorite hidden gem of Mr. Redmond’s is “The Drummer,” a song about a young drummer in an Irish regiment during the 1798 Irish Rebellion.
”They were stationed in a place in Ireland, and this drummer falls in love with this beautiful girl, and the beautiful girl finds out that he’s nothing more than a drummer in a regiment, and disses him,” Mr. Redmond says of the song’s story. “He threatens to commit suicide if he doesn’t win her hand, and she says, ‘Oh, don’t kill yourself, I’ll marry you.’” It’s an unusual tale of love, and that’s one of the reasons Mr. Redmond admires it. ”You break down these lyrics and go, ‘This is really, really strange,’” he says. “It’s a very cool tune.”
Along with Mr. Redmond, who sings and plays acoustic guitar and percussion, Na’Bodach consists of Bud Osthaus on bodhran, whistles and vocals; Glenn Owens on electric guitar, mandolin and harmony vocals; George Zienowicz on fiddle; and Casey Jones on vocals, pipes, whistles and fife.
Mr. Redmond and Mr. Jones also recently collaborated on an album titled Kilted Warriors, where they perform the music of the Civil War’s 79th New York Volunteer Infantry. (http://www.celtboy.org)
Mr. Redmond says that while the members of Na’Bodach are serious about their music, they don’t take themselves too seriously. Humorous touches can be found in the band’s name (which translated from Irish Gaelic means “not old men”) and album titles like Knickers Down, Bottoms Up and Intelagent Design. Humor can also be found in the cover of Intelagent Design and its depiction of the evolution of man, with the last figure being a bagpipe player.
Mr. Redmond says Celtic bands typically play in two styles. One is a session band, which plays on acoustic and traditional instruments. There are also Celtic rock bands that play Celtic sounds on standard rock instruments — drums, bass, electric guitar — while incorporating a traditional instrument like bagpipes or fiddle.
”We’re right in the middle,” Mr. Redmond says of Na’Bodach. “We don’t have the drums or the bass guitar, but we have all-electric instruments. We have electric fiddle, electric bagpipes, electric acoustic guitar, electric guitar, even the bodhran, the Irish drum, is electrified.”
Another of Na’Bodach’s goals is to play music that shows how the Celtic cultures of Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Scotland are connected to each other.
”Even though we’re non-political as a band, we actually are political in that a very distant subtext of what we’re about is to show the similarities — regardless of politics — of the music of that region,” Mr. Redmond says, “and to try to pull people together through their music rather than keep the divisions going because of their politics.”
